I was supposedly there to teach them but they were the ones teaching me. It truly was an eye opening experience for me. I've never had the privilege to be in an environment like that and it really opened my eyes to see how important it is to be educated about gender preferences/identities and creating spaces where our youth is able to explore, learn, and grow. With what is going on in our world and it being pride month. It just made me think about these kids being of all different races, backgrounds, and sexualities. Despite their differences they were still so loving and supportive of each other. They created a space where everyone could be authentic and still feel totally safe in their own skin. I think it's a great lesson that so many of us need to learn and understand. There is so much hate and discrimination in our society (even within the LGBTQ community). It is not acceptable. People need to be educated on racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobic, etc. And all of that starts with educating ourselves and then speaking out. All the protesting is finally creating some change. I hope all of you see the impact we can make by standing up for each other. This is just the beginning of what could be a time that gives ALL of us equal opportunities and changes so many lives. We must continue taking action for the oppressed.
