Each year I’d call him on Memorial Day and thank him for his service. Twenty five years active in the US Army, retired veteran and Colonel, and turned down the Purple Heart Medal in honor of his fallen men. He accomplished so much in his tenure (and lifetime) yet was one of the most genuinely humble souls and never used his rank or accolades to outdo others. He wasn’t intimidated of the spotlight, but he almost always used the opportunity to lift up someone else to have it instead. He knew who he was and had nothing to prove. I deeply admired that about him and it impacted my own walk in the best of ways. So here’s to you Dad, thank you for your service and sacrifice, and for demonstrating that the greatest and strongest of leaders are the ones who serve first and offer their ceiling as a springboard for others to leap from. You were the best of the best and I love you always. . . . Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed for the safety of others, for freedom, for peace, and for the goodwill of all.
