These rare cave formations, known as mammillaries, were created underwater, at a time when the lake was much higher than it is today. The formations that look like lion tails (the white stalactites with orange bulbs) formed close to the water surface, with the white part above the water and the orange part just below the surface. This contrast between them can give you an idea of the level of the lake in the past.
