I unearthed this tiny but important piece of my cinematic history while Quarantine cleaning my office and I’ve been blown away by how closely we followed the boards when we shot the sequence. I wrote the brief directions about what I wanted to see (to the right of each panel) and Scott did the rest. Even though I wrote and directed, the most visually oriented scenes in Mallrats came from Scotty Mo’s vision. Mos struggled a bit with his role on ‘Rats. Producers Jim Jacks and Sean Daniel hired Line Producer Laura Greenlee to handle all the stuff Scott had handled on CLERKS - which left Scott looking for stuff to do on ‘Rats beyond simply being my battery. I’d never make a decision without Scott standing nearby to co-sign - so to me, that made him the most essential element on set. But while doing the storyboards was an essential task to make the movie, the exercise also gave Scott a better sense of purpose in this new process we were both adjusting to, in which our flicks suddenly had an actual budget. Ironically, the next film we’d make would require Scott to do almost EVERYTHING by himself, with way less crew to assist and a budget drop of over $5 million. If Mos felt lost a bit on ‘Rats, he knew exactly where he was on Amy: when he wasn’t right beside me on set, he was sleeping in his office, under his desk, killing himself to get the flick made for $250k. Scott Mosier was one helluva producer - and now he’s one helluva director (@grinchmovie). And in 1995 on Mallrats, he was one helluva storyboarder. Scott and I are recording a new SModcast tonight.
