The 3 movies that I adored in my youth have informed the movies I’ve made for 26 years! Whether it’s the Death Star contractors in CLERKS, the Jedi Mind Trick in MALLRATS, Hooper’s intergalactic gentrification monologue in CHASING AMY, the Blunt Saber fight with @hamillhimself and Carrie’s Nun in JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, all the way up REBOOT and Jay’s movie daughter, Millennium Falcon. I love lots of movies, but my early love of all things Star Wars didn’t end in childhood: I took it all with me into adulthood, at a time when Star Wars was over and gone. Now, we have so much Star Wars, some folks have lost their appreciation for it. But not me: this was my first fandom. I’d loved Snoopy and Batman before Star Wars, but they both existed before I did: I was born into their world. Star Wars might have come into existence after I did, but here was something that didn’t predate me - it was like a gift TO me! That’s what gives my generation feels so entitled when it comes to the Star Wars Saga: we maintain an odd sense of ownership because we lived through that era and watched it happen in real time. We were in a theater when we learned (SPOILERS!) Vader is Luke’s Father! This was OUR mythology: something unique for us kids but also kinda familiar to our parents as the war movies or westerns they grew up watching. I owe a lot to the Star Wars movies (two of which include my name in the credits) for a lifetime of not just entertainment, but also for all the inspiration and material that’s fed MY work! Thank you, Poppa George! (Heads-Up: There’s a brand new WAKE & BAKE video podcast all about my history with Star Wars posted at That Kevin Smith Club this morning!
