We barely knew each other so you could forgive folks back then for thinking “This will never last...” And while there were times both of us were inclined to agree with our Doubting Thomases, today we’re 2 decades-plus into a hasty bet we wagered in our late 20’s. People aren’t likely designed to be together for as long as we humans opt to cohabitate. We’re animals too - and the majority of animals don’t mate for life. But it’s still an ideal our species strives for: a dream of a romance so epic, it can last our whole lives and survive the test of time. As we mark the start of our Blackjack Year, I barely recognize the couple in this photo - the children who made a choice with no knowledge of who they’d eventually grow up to be. We’re both now much smarter and informed than these kids were when they took the plunge. In truth, this was the most challenging year of our marriage. But in every relationship, sooner or later, there’s some shit to deal with - so sometimes, you just have to wipe as well as you can, hike your Jorts back up, and move on with the day. Look at the folks in this photo: everyone’s happy and hopeful because the movie’s just starting, and falling in love is the easy part.
