My brother Don, my sister @virginia_in_vienna and I all attended @olphstagnes (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) in my hometown of #highlandsnj. Pictured left to right: Dad, @donsgirlgrace, me, my 8th grade teacher Sister Theresa, Virginia, Don, principal Sister Gloria, and my third grade teacher Sister Anne (who left the convent years later). I’m all of 8 years old and that vest is wearing ME as I cross my arms, thinking it will hide my burgeoning belly instead of showcasing it. The Franciscan Sisters of the Infant Jesus arrived at OLPH in 1983, replacing older Nuns from a different order who still favored physical discipline to keep kids alive (and obedient). But even though these new Sisters wore more layers of a habit (even in the summer), they were much more progressive: God wasn’t to be feared, He was to be loved, they taught us. Sister Anne was the first teacher to notice that I was into acting, so she cast me in a Parable play as a greedy glutton who goes to Hell (a role I’d keep playing up until my heart attack). Sister Theresa, though? She nurtured my interests in theater and writing AND public speaking. Sr. T cast me as Cromwell in “A Man for All Seasons” and then had me deliver our 8th grade graduation address, even though I didn’t have the marks of a Valedictorian. But Sister Theresa defended her choice by asking the class point blank “With the exception of our Lord Jesus Christ, who loves to talk to a crowd more than Kevin Smith?” We are the sum total of all the people we ever meet, and Sr. Theresa’s belief in me as a performer likely changed the course of my life. If this adult in charge of me for six hours a day believed I was good at something, then I thought maybe I should lean into that thing. My brother Don still speaks with Sister Theresa periodically, so I know she was less-than-thrilled with the movies I’ve made (especially Dogma). I suspect she carries Catholic guilt about playing a role in unleashing me on the world, but I wish she could see all the people whose lives she’s effected simply by teaching me and telling that kid he might be good at a thing. Thanks to Sr. T, I turned that thing into *my* Habit! #KevinSmith」5月4日 1時15分 - thatkevinsmith
