Photo @hammond_robin | Yesterday was the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT). In 2014 I started @whereloveisillegal to record LGBTQI+ stories from around the world. That year, in South Africa, I photographed Boniwe Tyatyeka holding a photo of her daughter Nontsikelelo. Nontsikelelo’s body was found in September 2011, a year after she went missing, in a neighbor’s dustbin. She had been raped, beaten, and strangled to death. The murderer—the neighbor—said he did it "to change her": Nontsikelelo was a lesbian. Bigotry continues around the world: 69 countries still criminalize same-sex relations, millions live in fear of being who they are. COVID-19 is having a disproportionate impact on LGBTQI+ people, as emergency powers are often used to target them. This year’s IDAHOBIT theme is Breaking the Silence. Violence and fear has been silencing and killing LGBTQI+ people around the world for too long. It’s time it stopped.
