This species is critically endangered due to habitat destruction during coastal development and bycatch in fishing gear. The greatest threat, however, is hunting for their prized shell. While protection in many countries has slowed the harvest, they are still taken to make decorative items. Losing these turtles isn’t just a problem for turtles; they maintain the health of coral reefs by removing sponges and other prey from the reef’s surface.
