I think in sport women so often are absolutely pitted against each other. You’re taught that there isn’t room for more than one of you at the top. I learned to distance myself from my competitors, it absolutely changed my relationship with women. I would tell myself that it’s okay to be competitive, to be intense- that took me really far. It took me a long time to realize that connecting with my opponents, supporting other women, allowing more space at the top, that is how to become successful. By not basing my success off of the failure of others, by cheerleading anyone making progress, by appreciating the women pushing me to be better- that is how I became successful.
