If we learn one thing in the mountains, it’s that  there are no give aways. While the climbing was akin to walking on a trail and stepping over a fallen log or two, this horizontal pitch was extremely exposed. The air below was one aspect, the other was the air funneled. The wind descends the East Antarctic ice sheet, slams into the East Face of Ulvetanna and squeezes through this gap. We figured it was strong  and persistent enough to sculpt some very wild rock formations. Although it looked easy, the terrain was incredibly frigid and when retreating the route we would have to scramble over these geologic gargoyles once again.  Perhaps an analogy is that society is facing a similar predicament. It looks easy - yet the consequences are severe. We shelter at home and wear masks to prevent our infections from reaching other humans. By protecting others we protect ourselves.  Till we can come to terms with the virus it’s the best we can do. It’s counterintuitive, as doing something means doing nothing.
