Some urban problems, these growing pains… existed when I was working there in 1989. I was there working for the Pittsburgh Press because Wuhan bought a US Steel mill from Pittsburgh, but the leaders later realized there was not enough electric power in the entire province to run it. So they increased some of the infrastructure to accommodate the plant, but unfortunately, didn’t do it completely. The upshot was a dangerous work environment where Chinese steel workers wander thru smoke and haze with molten metal running through channels that they dug in the dirt, and it was exploding all around them. They wore heavy, protective clothing in this hot city to keep from being burned. Wuhan temperatures today are even warmer now than when these photos were taken. #Wuhan #China #archives」1月29日 0時30分
