The Arhuaco, an indigenous group in northern Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta massif, consider their home to be a sacred place that they must protect for the good of all humanity. Here, at nearly 16,000 feet along the shore of glacial Lake Naboba, Amado Villafaña infuses pieces of cotton fiber with reverence on a 12-day pilgrimage. A spiritual elder will deposit the fibers and other sacred materials alongside the lake as a payment for the life-sustaining functions provided by the natural world. The hat which Arhucao men wear represents the snowy peaks of the mountain, which today are sadly diminished.
Due to the incredible support of the Arhuaco director of the @yosokwi indigenous documentary team Amado Villafaña Chaparro, and of the indigenous organizations of the Sierra Nevada, National Geographic was given a unique opportunity to reach the sacred lake of Naboba close to the peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Writer Gena Steffens and I accompanied a convoy of Arhuaco pilgrims, led by Mamo Adolfo Chaparro, as they performed spiritual work to restore the balance of nature. We were able to gather evidence of the dramatic melting of the glaciers at the top of the Sierra Nevada. This was a most powerful experience for both Gena and myself, testimony to the deep commitment the indigenous people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta have to protect their mountain and to raise awareness of the devastating effects of climate change on the natural world. I am grateful to editors Alexa Keefe and Ollie Payne, Brian Jacobs, Rachel Bale and the Wyss Campaign for Nature for the support and cultural sensitivity that this story required. To the glaciologist Jorge Luis Ceballos of Ideam. And also to Marcelino Villafaña for helping us get down safely from El Guardían.
