For the scariest day of the year, we give you the deep-sea dragonfish.⁣ ⁣ These terrifying apex predators have enormous jaws filled with fang-like teeth which they can extend to snatch and swallow prey much bigger than themselves. They use a special organ called a photophore to create bioluminescence. These create little pinpricks of light in the darkness which give the illusion they are much smaller than they are, and when fish are lured in, they use their fearsome jaws to capture them.⁣ ⁣ However, before we give you nightmares, even if you did find yourself going for a swim at 1,500 metres below sea level, as they’re only just bigger than a hamster, you wouldn’t be in trouble.
