How do mountains hear? With mountaineers. 😁
While this dad joke might register on the corny end of humor, there is a real connection to the 21st century. If mountains need us to hear they also need us to speak. This is exactly what the global climate strike is setting out to do on the 20th of September 2019. With motivation set in motion by @グレタ・トゥーンベリ of Sweden children and children at heart will make their voices heard.
The two image of Mt Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse in Nepal are taken from Pumori Camp 1. The first image, taken by Norman Dyenfurth in the late 1950s, when contrasted to a recent image offers a clear view of how the Khumbu glacier has shrunk over the past half century. The high angle ice on Nuptse and the West Shoulder is diminishing. The Khumbu Glacier has lost mass and volume as it is doesn’t have the snow input and is experiencing warmer weather.
What are we striving for? @protectourwinters has a neat Venn diagram that lines out what we as a nation and global citizens need to address to make the goals set out in the Paris Accords. The Theory of Change addreses three areas: 1. technology (wind and solar) & financial instruments; 2. cultural change (the conversation we are having); 3. political will (level playing field for renewables). Together all these can help limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. No question it’s an ambitious goal. Yet we as humans can make this happen. We need to make it a priority. The future of humanity hinges on the next 40 years.
