Time has me wondering what life would have been like had the mountain not taken you. Would you have settled down? Would you have kept exploring the greater ranges? Gone for both?  I’m confident you would be excited to see climbing, in all its forms, progress. More commitment in the alpine, increased training, leashless ice climbing and solo climbing have all changed the sport. It’s better by many measures, yet the standard you set for yourself and others will be a bedrock for how climbers interpret  mountains and the art of climbing.  Location was always a central part of of your motivation and appreciation. Being in a place that had wild exposure, more so if no person had ever been there, was your energy source. From the “inside of the light bulb” of El Cap to the realness of the Alaska Range these were your places of pilgrimage.  In the 27 years since your passing many bold and visionary climbs have been accomplished in your spirit via the goodwill your legacy created. All are thankful. You moved the needle.  I’ve gone from the grasshopper to being the “you’ve got this” man for our community of climbers. I wouldn’t be here without you. Mugs Stump would have celebrated his 70th birthday on the 28th of August had it not been for a crevasse collapse on the 21st of May 1992.
Time has me wondering what life would have been like had the mountain not taken you. Would you have settled down? Would you have kept exploring the greater ranges? Gone for both?
