Bob A. Shelfhout Aubertijn writes an interesting article:
Before I give you another piece to chew on, let me be absolutely clear, so there's no need to be mistaken about anything that I bring up. I am as much in awe as anybody else about the effort Nirmal Purja (Nims) is pulling off on his 8000ers project, albeit that some of you may appear slightly more hysterical at times in your reactions. It is an almost superhuman effort and I am willing to bet a pretty penny that this will go into the books for a long, long time to come, regardless if he manages to complete his quest or not.
This is not a critique, but I have a question - and I know I'm not the only one struggling with this - and to me, and the people that I've talked with, it looks like something that's relevant to the tribe as it deals with aspects that go to the very heart of what climbing is all about. The thing is, from the statisticians I hear he climbs all of the 8000ers with bottled oxygen, even the smaller ones, and he makes use of much of the infrastructure put in place by others and other teams [bar the ascent of K2 earlier this week]. What Nims is trying to do - he's done 11 of the 14 in the space of 3 months already - defies any description, but I am having troubles finding a slot in which to catagorize this in the books. So the question is; "how much of this should still be considered "mountaineering""? It appears to be more like fell running at high altitude multiplied by a large value of X. In a way it almost is like he's a magnified version of Killian Jornet on steroids or amphetamine. Or in the way a multiple-8000er-summiteer-friend put it; "It's as if you try to measure a football player by the distance travelled on the pitch during a match... Just running a record number of kilometres doesn't make you Messi." [Again; this is a serious question, so there's no need to shoot the messenger, OK?]

Their 10th, 8000m peak in 2019? 😳 That’s unfathomable. Simply incredible! And has me wondering, is there a record for most 8000m peaks summited in a year?
