Photo by @jessicasample | Off the island of Ischia lies a fort-city on a rugged islet accessed by a stone causeway. The first fortress was built here in 474 BC, but the majority of the castle dates back to the 1400s. This sunny fortress with 360-degree ocean views now has cafes and a hotel but also has a few dark sides. There is an old convent with a room with toilet-like chairs where nuns were expected to pray for their decomposing sisters every day which caused them to become sick in turn. The castle also includes a Museum of Torture, with a collection of medieval torture devices. Access closes at sunset so try to time your visit an hour or two before closing for the best light. #ischia #castelloaragonese
