Photo by @bethjwald | Bright green fields line the bank of the Patacancha River below ancient terraces that cling to steep hillsides, in the highlands near Ollantaytambo, Cusco Department, Peru. For many Andean communities in South America, August is a time to celebrate and honor the life-giving power of Pachamama or Mother Earth in rituals and traditions that ask for protection of crops and livestock during this coldest month of the Southern Hemisphere. So this month, I want to celebrate the enduring culture and legacy of Andean peoples of the Americas, and all
indigenous peoples across the world who honor, worship and strive to live in harmony with the natural world and who understand that by taking care of the earth, her bounty will sustain us. It is something we should all be more mindful of, and we should all work harder to care for our one mother–this fragile, beautiful earth.
