Olga Tokarczuk has become famous for her fragmentary novels—a particularly suitable form for an author from Poland, where national borders have changed almost constantly through the centuries, and where multiple ethnic groups have lived side by side in a cacophony of languages and experience. Her narrative of history embraces fragmentation, diversity, and intermingling, offering an alternative to the one put forth by the country’s right-wing nationalists. We need more international writers available in the US! We are much more of a monoculture than we realize. Every other country reads our authors but we read few others.

Thank you for writing about Tokarczuk. And for this photo description, because that is what Poland is, contrary to ideas common about it in the West.
