Photo by @catherinekarnow // The region of Lost Palaces - Chettinad in South India is filled with imposing, sometimes crumbling mansions originally built by prosperous 19th-century Indian traders to show off their wealth. The palatial houses, measuring anywhere between 1,900 and 6500 square metres were mostly built between the early 1800s and the 1940s. The villas are filled with treasures such as Bohemian chandeliers, Italian marble, Burmese teak, Belgian mirrors, and priceless antiques. The area has yet to be recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, and mansions are being torn down, left neglected, or sometimes bought up and repainted gaudy colors. Jodi Ireland and Valerie Hoffman take a ride in a vintage Ambassador on my India Photo Workshop. Please head on over to my profile to see more of my images. Join me in January 2020 when we return back to this extraordinary region, as well as other magical places in Tamil Nadu, the heart and soul of South India. All the details are here.
