Here you can see the family gathered around a feed bucket as they supplement the hen's diet of grass and bugs. If you are an animal and health-conscious eater you should shop for eggs with the label "Pasture Raised." "Free Range" and "Cage Free" are sadly not all they're cracked up to be. "Cage Free" simply means the birds are not in a cage, but they can still be packed in like sardines and never see sunlight or any world outside their barn. "Free Range" means the door to the barn has to be open for some part of the day, but that could mean for just five minutes. It also doesn't mean the hens have access to forest or prairie or grass. "Pasture Raised," however, requires that hens have free access to the outdoors during the day (the whole day) and natural greens such as forest or grass.
