3/3 - We know that fasting has been around for ever. Yet it’s hard to grasp what it can do, or represent for us.
This year has been wonderful for me, because I’m allowing myself to follow my path. This was part of it. In August, I am going on a silent retreat. In October, our @Garance Doré Studio retreat (launching this week!)! I’m like a kid on a self discovery journey, enjoying each step. .
It was hard to let go of all the things. Caffeine, sugar, “comfort food”, all of it. It takes some effort. You get headaches. You can find yourself light headed. Not too many cravings though. And not too hungry. .
Soon, you start feeling good.
How to explain...
.
Well first - body. You feel light. Digestion is 👌🏼.You also feel a different vibration in your bones. Something subtle shifts. I felt happy, energetic. I wanted to laugh all the time - also because Stephanie & I - we spend our time bullshitting 😂
.
AND THEN - mind. I’d heard about brain fog, had no idea what it meant. But suddenly I felt clear. In a few days all the emotions that usually pummel me in every direction quieted down. I could think clearly without feeling carried away. I felt calm, decisive, joyful. .
Like I took off a heavy jacket. .
This was the most profound discovery, the one that made me question everything about the way I nourish myself. You know mental health is a priority - for me & in my work. How come this clarity is not my natural, every day state? What can I do to change that?
.
I came back home and bought a ton of veggies. Because post-fast is super important - also because it’s a great moment to explore how food makes you feel. And oh, when you come back from a fast, a steamed broccoli feels like a delicious feast. So...
.
I know there is no way to feel as clear everyday because life happens & that’s good! I’m not a monk. But this has marked the beginning of something new. I was saying to my therapist - if you’d never seen the color blue, could you imagine it? .
I had never felt like that.
So - in my quest for inner peace, this was a big moment. .
.
.

Garance, thanks for the wonderful 3 posts on fasting; it’s really interesting how it produces a change in your body and mind and how that shows how connected both are. As a physician with focus on cancer and a two times cancer patient, I feel your posts are missing a little bit of scientific background to let people understand.
.
The positive effect of fasting; lightness, increase in focus, good humor/mood, etc is because of the ketosis and the metabolic changes the body goes through in order to keep the energy feeding the cells through the degradation of fat (there are no carbs to burn, so it burns lipids). The effect on the brain increases will and inner power, and gives a sense of happiness and strength. It’s the principal why people/prisoners can go through a hunger strike.
.
Your journey is really interesting but it’s good to keep in mind that information (proper information) is what draws the line between doing something mindfully and getting into a body-image trap or an eating disorder. No judgmental intention here, but wanted to bring this into the conversation.

Thank you, Garance. This is fascinating information! I’ve been prescribed intermittent fasting 16:8 as well as meditation for my post concussion syndrome which causes in some patients brain fog, depression symptoms, headaches, and a whole slew of other fun stuff. Cravings for sugar among them. The intermittent fasting which I just began has been helpful in many ways so far. Mediation, on the other hand, I have sorta failed at every attempt. So yes, I am very interested! ?

Wonderful! Thank you for sharing and educating ? Completely agree that food impacts mental and physical health, and it’s so important to find a healthy relationship around nourishment. I enjoy intermittent fasting because it makes me feel good, it’s a time to reset, and rebalance. ?? So happy to hear you did this retreat for yourself and got so much positive information about yourself in return! ?

The first I fasted was for religious reasons - I do fast during Lent and sometimes during the year. It helps clarify the mind but @garancedore how do you do it? Water only for a certain amount of days? Or do you fast during the. Day and eat lightly?

Wow this is exactly how I feel every time Ramadan comes along (Muslim fasting month where we abstain from food & water from sunrise to sunset for 1 month). But, I can't seem to sustain it beyond that 1 month. How do you do it?

C’est l’un des piliers de l’Islam .Dieu a créé le corps humain et connaît très bien sa structure culturelle et physique . Perso je jeûne souvent et quand je me lasse et je me sens fatiguée, mon corps me le réclame ?
