Photo by Amy Toensing @amytoensing | In honor of International Widows Day: This is Betty Nanozi working on her land which she has had to fight to keep because she is a widow. When her husband died family members tried to force her off and even threatened her and her son’s life if she didn’t leave. With the help of lawyers from @ijm (International Justice Mission) Christine fought back in court and won. An estimated one third of widows in Uganda are victims to this crime known as “Property Grabbing” and according to the global campaign “Stand For Her Land” women in half the world are still denied land and property rights even in countries like Uganda where the laws legally protect women.
