From an early age, Edward #Burra was fascinated by #travel and the #Mediterranean provided the greatest draw of all, as the artist soaked up the atmosphere of the eclectic crowds and heady #bohemian underworld. Painted circa 1930, ‘#Flamenco Dancer’ captures the #Spanish flair with great gusto and theatricality, fusing together the kitsch glamour with the everyday grittiness.

Fellow #artist John #Craxton also sought adventure and romance – discovering that the #landscape, culture and rich history of #Greece fulfilled these requirements. ‘#Greek #Farm’ was painted in the summer of 1946, just a few weeks after Craxton had left a war-ravaged Britain and was confronted with a shocking idyll. The work pulsates with life and brings to mind images from #classical #sculpture.

From the renowned collection of the late Pat and Penny Allen, these works were acquired in the late 1960s / early 1970s and will make their #auction debut as the first two lots of our Modern & Post-War British Art Evening Sale on 18 June.
