Photo by @bethjwald | Quechua villagers in the high, cold Puno region of Peru round up vicuña, a wild camelid which has some of the finest wool in the world. The animals were poached almost to extinction in the 1980’s for their wool, which sells for as much as $1000 a kilo. But the indigenous Andean communities of the Puno have an ancient and symbiotic with the vicuña which has helped ensure its survival. They protect them from poachers but also harvest the wool in semi-annual chaccus in which they gather the animals, shear the biggest and healthiest and then release them back into the wild. Sale of the wool goes to support community projects. The tradition of the chaccu dates back to the time of the Inca when only the Incan royalty could wear garments woven from the wool of the vicuña.
