Photo by @daisygilardini | The Great Bear Rainforest on B.C.'s Pacific coast is home to the Kermode bear, also known as the “spirit bear,” as well as black and brown bears.
The elusive spirit bear is a black bear with a recessive gene that makes its fur appear a creamy yellow. They’re shy and do not like to share their territory with the much bigger grizzly bears. This mother climbed a tree with her black cub the moment she scented her big neighbor. We observed the grizzly pass by. It was only after a few hours, when the danger was long gone, that the mother spirit bear and her cub decided to climb down and go back to fishing in the river.
