Did you know that the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is the world's largest pelagic (ocean-going) turtle? It can be more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) long and weigh as much as 1,400 pounds (636 kilograms). It’s also the only sea turtle with a soft, rubbery shell. (All others have hard, bony-plated shells). It has special adaptations that allow it to eliminate waste gases through its skin, so it can stay under water for extraordinarily long periods. Its body is also insulated by a thick layer of fat—another adaptation that is unique among turtles to leatherbacks.
