What has wings, a snake-like neck, and the tail of a turkey? Meet the Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga). It’s known as the snake bird for the way its long neck moves through the water when it’s swimming. It’s also sometimes referred to as the water turkey for its fan-shaped tail. It spends much of its time in the water hunting for fish, using its sharp bill as a spear to stab prey. You might be surprised to learn that the Anhinga’s feathers aren’t waterproof like other aquatic birds. In order to dry itself off, it will perch up somewhere on land, fan out its tail, and spread its wings.
