What has pink eyelids, is nocturnal, and lives in sub-Saharan Africa? If you guessed Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (Bubo lacteus), you’re correct! Though it may look like it’s wearing eye shadow, the pink hue is the natural color of its eyelids—and it’s visible as early as one week after hatching. This bird of prey is also the largest owl in Africa, weighing as much as 6.9 pounds (3.1 kilograms) with a wingspan that can reach over 5 feet (1.5 meters). As a raptor, it’s an apex predator; with the help of its sound-muffling plumage and strong talons, it quietly snatches prey such as squirrels, rabbits, and baby warthogs.
