At the top of YouTube, the world’s largest and most volatile video platform, sits Susan Wojcicki, the site’s calm, levelheaded CEO. When she got the job in 2014, Susan was coming from Google and hailed as the most powerful woman in advertising. Back then, she had an audacious goal: Get users to watch more than a billion hours of videos every day. But somewhere along the way, her job became less about growth and more about toxic containment. During a single week in February, BuzzFeed reported that @YouTube was running advertisements alongside anti-vaccine content; there was a nationwide panic over the platform abetting child suicide; and a viral video showed how pedophiles were flourishing on the site. “I own this problem, and I’m going to fix it,” she said. @peterprato shot this photo of her, and Minh Uong made it into an illustration.
