Speaking in Dance | “This is a pallavi, and it is pure dance,” said Sujata Mohapatra, who specializes in Odissi, the classical Indian form known for its sculptural poses, silky motion and rhythmic intricacies. “It uses the most graceful movements of the neck, head, mudra — the hand gestures — and torso and the feet. Everything is so precise.” This solo also, she said, imparts the flavor of the great technique of her guru, Kelucharan Mohapatra. As part of the 2-day Dancing the Gods festival presented by @worldmusicinstitute at @symphonyspace this weekend, Sujata, accompanied by live musicians, will perform Kelucharan’s works on Sunday night. “The beautiful music makes so many melodies, and those melodies put the rhythm inside you and makes you elevate,” she told the #nytimes writer @giadk. “In pure dance, you have to be good at technique. It flows with the music and with the rhythm and with the body movement: It’s like a river.” @mosadek made this video for #SpeakingInDance, our weekly Wednesday series exploring the world of #dance.
