A new ultrasound scanner that plugs into an iPhone could revolutionize global medicine in rural communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, where the nearest X-ray machine may be hours away. The hand-held device, called the Butterfly iQ, is battery-powered and about the size of an electric shaver. For now, the scanners are primarily used to check for pneumonia, which is often misdiagnosed and a major killer of children in poor countries. For the Connecticut company that produces it, the goal was to make an affordable scanner (it’s priced at $2,000) that is as portable as a stethoscope. “Two-thirds of the world’s population gets no imaging at all,” said Jonathan Rothberg, @butterflynetwork’s founder. “When you put something on a chip, the price goes down and you democratize it.” @esther_mbabazi shot this photo.
