Civilian and military leaders are engaged in testy negotiations over the future of Sudan following the removal of its former president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir. Each side wants to take control, promising to undo the legacy of 3 decades of misrule under al-Bashir. Lt. Gen. Salah Abdelkhalig, Sudan’s Air Force chief, and other senior generals ousted al-Bashir in a bloodless coup, and al-Bashir is now in prison, under investigation for allegations of money-laundering and other financial crimes. Now tens of thousands of youthful protesters remain camped outside the military’s headquarters, refusing to leave until the military grants their demand for a swift transition to civilian rule. @bdentonphoto shot this photo of protesters in Khartoum, Sudan, last week as they listened to activists give speeches against al-Bashir’s regime.
