In one of the most bizarre Bird-of-Paradise displays, the Blue Bird-of-Paradise hangs upside down and fans out his breast plumes to show off his bold pattern to a female above. They do this very rarely however, and it took me a couple weeks just to catch this one display shot. One thing that motivates me to work so hard to photograph the Birds-of-Paradise in the wild, is that this amazing group of birds are, I believe, the best possible ambassadors for the rain forests of New Guinea, which are critical for not only protecting biodiversity, but mitigating climate change.
