You may have seen it, but do you know what it took to capture this image of a Red Bird-of-Paradise male displaying at the top of the canopy in Batanta? I shot this from the highest tree blind I have ever made, 50 meters (165 ft.) up in the biggest tree in the area, where I constructed a blind literally out on a limb on the opposite side of the tree from this perch used by the birds. For about a week, I climbed my rope in the dark, and got set up before dawn to wait for the birds to come. Only once did I capture this perfect pose. Yes, a lot of effort for one shot, but well worth it. Truly unique images rarely come easily.
