Mountain hare ears – I thought that I’d post something a little different today, an image that effectively took me 15 years to execute properly. I first had the idea for an image such as this back in the days of film when, whilst up in the Monadhliath mountains, in the first few days that I ever spent with these adorable creatures. I was approaching a hare on an exposed mountain flank, moving cautiously as always the hare and benefitting as the hare itself was concealed behind a small bank. As I edged closer the hares erect ears appeared over the bank but before I had time to capture the image his head popped over as well. Nevertheless an idea was born and one that I never fully realised until last year. This time I was with my good mate @kevmorgans and we’d spent a fair while approaching a hare that would later turn out to be named Grouse. Over time so we worked ourselves into a position but because I’d initially found the hare I was leading the stalk. When we did finally get into the correct position I was able to capture this image but I knew that Kev, who was a bit behind me, had a more elevated view that was introducing more distractions whereas mine was simply hare ears on pure white. Over time the hare moved off to feed and as Kev and I sat there I showed him this image on the back of my camera and told him that it’d taken me 15 years to finally capture it. No sooner had I uttered those fateful words than Grouse came lolloping back to the exact spot and then sat there with her ears fully erect. It was at that point that Kev, doing what anybody with any sense would have done, leant down, said ‘I’ll have that’ and nailed the exact same image. It’s a testament to how honourable Kev is, and what a good mate of mine that he is, that he’s kept his version hidden until such time as I’d released mine so please, if you don’t already follow @kevmorgans then please do, he really is one of life’s true gents and he’s a bloody good mate of mine.
