I traveled overland into Afghanistan from Tajikistan. US Coalition Forces had recently begun air strikes against the Taliban. This is a brief look at the landscape of war as I traveled towards Kabul, ending the day the Taliban fled the capital on Nov 13, 2001. These marks were left by decades of war going back to the Soviet wars with Afghanistan, a land to this day that has never been conquered. Afghanistan is the longest war in US history, continuing to this day - 17 years, 6 months, 1 week and 1 day. - Photo 1: (Swipe) Receiving a pretty nice haircut at this barbershop located in the Mustafa Hotel in Kabul. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo 2: (Swipe) Tank treads, left in the sand going back likely to the early 80’s and the war with the Soviets. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo 3: A homeless man sleeps on the streets of Kabul beneath a wall mural depicting how to identify landmines. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo 4: (Swipe) Strangest most demented kindness I’d ever seen. As the Taliban and the Northern Alliance where in battle against rah other outside Kunduz, all of a sudden the sound of gunfire stopped and both sides dropped their weapons...it was time for evening prayers. Fighting returned shortly thereafter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo 5: (Swipe) Bad place to park, Kabul. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo 6: I reach Kabul on Nov 13, the day the Taliban fled the capital after weeks of air assaults. I decided to wander the city and like many photographers, came upon an area in Kabul that had been completely destroyed going back to when Masood and his forces shelled from those mountains in the distance when the Soviet’s were occupy the city. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Before heading to South America, I‘ve been publishing all week a series of self portraits with background insight from various assignments over the years with National Geographic, Time magazine and other publications. Nov 3, 2001, began my 1st of many trips to this most amazing county, a land and people that has seen more conflict than most of us would ever care to perceive.
