I held her hand as she bravely told me about her husband’s tragic death, multiple rapes, and subsequent children born prematurely due to lack of nutrition. Severe mental trauma and victim shaming don’t begin to scratch the surface of her daily challenges, which she mostly faces alone because many family members have ostracized her. I couldn’t keep my composure when she told me frankly that she didn’t dare have a dream because she hardly contains the will to live. THIS is what I’m doing here: listening. Soaking up every single detail no matter how hard. My job is to communicate to people back home to the BEST OF MY ABILITY the reality that these families face. Her assuredness to say that she and her children would not have survived without the (Cambodian) World Vision Representatives gives me the confidence to know that these lives are CHANGING for the better. I feel helpless and insignificant staring into the souls of these strong people for I have no answers... but I know that I can use my voice in order to help in the smallest way.
