The Dance Division of the New York Public Library has the largest and most eclectic collection of #dance materials anywhere. During a recent visit to @nypl, #nytimes chief dance critic @alastair.macaulay received a tour from Linda Murray, the dance collection’s curator. She showed Alastair the library’s rarer treasures, such as these ballet shoes, photographed by @j_cervantes. #Ballet shoes can be mere items of fan fetishism. The dance division, however, has a number of shoes that are historically telling. For example, the shoes on the left were worn by #AnnaPavlova in the 1920s. The other 2 were worn by #SergeLifar in 1927. The dance division also regularly films dance productions in the city; it aims to have a copy of every dance book ever published; it possesses treasures going back centuries; and its doors are open to the public as well as to specialist researchers. This year, the division is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Visit the link our profile to see more of its rare treasures.
