Photo by @joemcnallyphoto In 1972, a photo of a nine year old girl named Kim Phuc, running down the road, horribly burned by napalm, did much to move attitudes and focus world opinion on America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The photographer who made that picture, Nick Ut, won a Pulitzer. Many years later, I was assigned by LIFE magazine to find the subjects of Pulitzer Prize winning photos, and catch up to them. Hence I encountered Kim, one of the loveliest people I have ever met, in Canada, and made this photo of her caring for and nursing her new baby Thomas. Seeing this beautiful baby, held by his wonderful, loving mother, her body horribly scarred from the burns, was a singular moment behind the camera. We have occasionally met since then, as she crusades and lectures for peace and understanding around the world.
