The @NationalWestern Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, bills itself as the premier #livestock and #rodeo gathering in the U.S. Every January, thousands of agricultural families come together for a 16-day celebration of Western heritage. It’s no secret that making a living off the land has grown more difficult, particularly in the West. Grasslands have been swallowed by development, and what remains is threatened by drought and climate change. But in the event halls and on the arena floor at the stock show, many people said their clothing choices — from shimmering chaps to well-worn bandanas — were meant to defy the idea that the rural West had disappeared. “We’re not only ambassadors for the rodeo,” said Kelly Lynch, “but for the Western way of life.” #nytimes national correspondent @fotojulie spent 2 days at the show, speaking with people about the role clothing plays in continuing that legacy.
