In @nytmag | In January 2017, less than a week after Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s seventh feature film “The Salesman” was nominated for an #AcademyAward for best foreign-language movie, President #Trump signed the executive order most commonly known as the Muslim Ban. Under its terms, citizens of 7 Muslim-majority countries, Iran among them, were barred from entering the U.S. for 90 days. In response, @asgharfarhadiofficial boycotted the #Oscars. Then, “The Salesman” won. Asghar has perfected a cinema of moral pluralism in a country where taking sides can be dangerous. He had asked 2 Iranian-Americans to represent him at the ceremony and they read a statement from Asghar saying he decided not to attend “out of respect for the people of my country” and the 6 other nations targeted by Trump’s executive order. By dividing the world into “us” and “our enemies,” the speech continued, Trump was creating “a deceitful justification for aggression and war.” @newshatavakolian took this photo of Asghar in Tehran, #Iran, near the mountains in the north of the city.
