In less than 60 days, absent a sudden outbreak of amity in its domestic politics, #Britain will leave the E.U. without a deal spelling out what happens next. That means British companies must plan for outcomes both wildly unknown and potentially damaging. Fearful of havoc and border chaos, companies are stockpiling products, exploring new shipping routes and making backup plans. Filtermist, a company in Telford, #England, makes devices that suck oil vapor out of factory air. It will ship extra stock to Germany, which is squarely within the E.U. If there’s a border issue, the company can rely on the stash to get its goods to European customers. “Everybody’s stockpiling. It’s incredibly annoying. It’s frustrating,” said Filtermist’s chief executive, James Stansfield. Another company, Pressmark Pressings in Atherstone, England, makes auto parts. John Nollett, a company owner, worries about delays on the steel he imports from Belgium, so the company has increased its reserves of steel by half. @suziehowellphoto shot these first 2 photos at the Filtermist plant and the last 3 photos at the Pressmark plant.
