Police forces in #Britain are shrinking, as are social services. Now officers are overwhelmed with problems that other agencies once handled, leaving them with less time to collect evidence and solve crimes, #nytimes UK correspondent Benjamin Mueller reports. The West Midlands Police has seen $220 million in budget cuts since the Conservative-led government’s austerity program began in 2010, and the department has slashed a quarter of its officers. Meanwhile, the number and range of emergency calls has risen sharply in Birmingham. The problem is compounded by cuts to addiction services, housing benefits, gang mediation programs and social services for both adults and children, creating problems that often fall to the police. “It was all right, the police being the jack-of-all-trades, when there was a necessary amount of funding,” Constable Richard Chant said. “But if you’ve got 20,000 less police officers, less funding, then somebody needs to make the decision about what they want us to do.” @andrew_testa shot this photo of a police officer investigating a burglary in Birmingham, England, in November.
