Instead of choosing the perfect ensemble for a night out, Magnhild Kennedy and her friends make their own costumes for the evening, often with embellished masks included. After moving from Oslo, Norway to London in 2007, Kennedy began to experiment with design and costume making while working at a vintage shop and started learning fashion design techniques by watching YouTube.
Her masks happen to decorate one of the most visible spaces she has: her Instagram feed (@damselfrau), which showcases her creations, some made with intricate beading, some with textiles, and others raffia or tassels. “The whole process starts with whatever material I’m interested in,” Kennedy explains. “I connect with materials on an emotional level. I don’t draw or sketch, but instead just sculpt and let the materials lead the way.” She searches for her fabrics and found objects everywhere she goes, whether it’s in a piece of antique clothing, which she’ll completely take apart, or cheap plastic trinkets from the £1 shop.
Today, we're excited to introduce #vogueworld, a new sub-site of Vogue.com dedicated to giving space to the talented, interesting, emerging voices dictating some of the most important conversations we are currently having. Tap the link in our bio to read more about Kennedy, who we are spotlighting today alongside 99 other fascinating personalities to know now.
