In Ghana's capital city Accra, a quiet streetwear revolution is brewing. It’s here in this unassuming studio space, one that serves as office, workshop, and general hangout, that a crew of fashion entrepreneurs known as Free the Youth is building its empire. @MechaClarke, pictured above, serves as the PR exec of Free the Youth, helping to shape the look of youth culture in Africa. Just as hip hop gave rise to American streetwear labels such as FUBU (For Us, By Us), Rocawear, and Phat Farm in the ’90s, Free the Youth has intimate ties to the country’s burgeoning underground music scene. Though now based in Accra, the label formed in Tema, the harbor city adjacent to Ghana’s capital known for its vibrant underground music scene, particularly the rapidly growing trap scene. Fusing Southern American hip-hop beats with the sounds of traditional West African instruments and regional dialects, Ghanaian trap has given voice to the country’s buzzing, young creative class.
