Part 2 of my last day in #Rwanda ❤️: An enormous surprise in our day was that we got an invitation to meet Rwanda's President the Honorable Mr Paul Kagame. Mr Kagame has loved & lead Rwanda since his time as commander of the rebel-forces who ended the genocide in 1994. As President, he will have helped Rwanda grow to a middle income country by 2020. He oversaw the writing of Rwanda's new constitution, making sure to craft gender equity into it by enacting laws like all children have to go to school, girls can't marry before the age of 21 (so they have a chance to build their life instead of being married off early), & implementing a 20% quota on female representation in Parliament. He is an incredible human, with a strict hand, healing & transforming his country with vision & grace. It was an unspeakable honor to meet him. Our final stop in #Kigali was the @kigali_memorial . There are no words that could capture the horror of the genocide. If you don't know Rwanda's history, I encourage you to look into it. It is a sobering story, that provides almost inconceivable context for the loving, progressive country Rwanda is now. The guiding principle of the memorial is that we ALL must be vigilant to avoid these atrocities happening anywhere ever again. Tho they have. And are. We must- each of us- devote our lives to justice & equity & peace. To the protection of the innocent & the tempering of hate. The memorial does this by "education & peace-building." I can't think of a better example to humbly follow. I'm so grateful to meet you, Rwanda. And so inspired by the work you're doing there- & around the globe- @careorg . Thank you to everyone who made this trip possible & to everyone I met during my stay. This week will be in my heart forever. See you very soon again, I hope. Much, much love! #FightWithCare ??❤️??❤️??❤️
