My second day with @careorg in #Rwanda started by meeting three amazing young women breaking gender stereotypes at #IPRC , the polytechnic university in Kigali. Diane & Diane showed us their innovations in #ElectricalEngineering , & Betty tried to teach me to #weld & to use the #lathe - let's just say, I'm glad she's in charge not me. ?
Next we had a meeting inside the chamber of the Parliament building with 3 Rwandan Senators. Rwanda’s parliament happens to have the highest percentage of female representatives in a single house of parliament in the world (62%)! It was an edifying hour- learning more about the nation's history with a particular slant toward the overt steps they've taken to insure gender equality by instilling it in the tenets of their new constitution. They even have equal pay for men & women. Thank you for such an enlightening & inspiring time, Honorable Margaret Nyagahura, Honorable Jacqueline Muhongayire, & Honorable Dr. Jean Damascene Ntawukuriryayo !
We then had the loveliest afternoon at the #Kigali home of The Ambassador of the United States of America, Honorable Peter H. Vrooman & his wife the incredible photographer Johnette Iris Stubbs. A delicious meal, more thought-provoking conversation, & much hilarity ensued.
I'm now writing this sitting at the base of #VolcanoesNationalPark ready to trek to see the #gorillas tmrw. ???
