Photo by @Cory Richards // Mountaineer Simone Moro navigates the unstable ice fall descending from camp 1 on an acclimatization push on Gasherbraum II, also known as “G2”. The team of three (Cory Richards, Simone Moro and Denis Urubko) made the first winter ascent of the Pakistani peak, narrowly escaping a class IV avalanche upon their descent. Emerging from the wreckage, Richards self-captured his frozen ice-encrusted face, an image that would become a cover for National Geographic’s 125th Anniversary Issue. He was named one of National Geographic’s Explorers of the year in the 2012 for the ascent and coverage.
